DEA, Mexico pledge to attack methamphetamine production

Published August 23, 2012

Associated Press

The Drug Enforcement Administration and the government of Mexico are pledging increased cooperation in attacking illegal methamphetamine production.

Under a newly announced agreement, the DEA and Mexico will bolster intelligence sharing and joint law enforcement training efforts.

Mexico has experienced a dramatic increase in seizures of clandestine methamphetamine labs in the past two years. Last year, seizures of meth along the Southwest U.S. border totaled more than 16,000 pounds.

Maribel Cervantes, the general commissioner of Mexico's federal police, says the recent increase in the production and consumption of designer drugs is both a security and a health problem that demands immediate attention by both governments.

U.S. allows NGOs to transfer earthquake aid money to Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will temporarily allow non-governmental organizations to transfer money to Iran to help the country rebuild from an earthquake disaster, the Treasury said on Tuesday.

The United States has an array of sanctions in place against its foe Iran, which U.S. officials accuse of seeking to build nuclear weapons.

Iran was hit by two powerful earthquakes on August 11 that flattened villages in the northwest of the country and killed more than 300 people.

Treasury said it was issuing a license that will temporarily allow NGOs to transfer up to $300,000 into Iran for reconstruction activity until October 5.

"The general license is a demonstration of (the) administration's commitment to supporting the Iranian people affected by this tragedy," Treasury said in a statement.

To transfer more than $300,000 to Iran, NGOs will need to apply for a special license, Treasury said.

Man charged for Obama death threat email

An armed man who allegedly made a death threat against US President Barack Obama in an expletive-filled email was charged over the incident, court papers showed.

Anton Calouri, 31, is accused of threatening to kill the president and of assaulting a law enforcement official at the time of his arrest Tuesday in Federal Way, a suburb of Seattle, Washington.

"I will kill the president!!!!! " Calouri allegedly wrote in an email to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"COME GET ME... 'I' WON'T FIGHT AGAINST YOU... 'I' WANT YOU TO COME AND GET ME."

According to court papers, Secret Service agents and federal police stormed Calouri's apartment after he sent the threatening email to an FBI office.

"Recent national events are a stark reminder that we must take these threats of death or violence seriously," said US Attorney Jenny Durkan.

"This case had all the troubling ingredients: threats of violence and explosive devices, multiple weapons with hundreds of rounds and even brandishing of a weapon at law enforcement."

Calouri was armed when he was arrested. Obama, who was campaigning in Ohio on Tuesday, did not appear to be in any immediate danger.

ABC News affiliate KOMO reported that two weapons were confiscated at Calouri's home and that a bomb unit was called "out of an abundance of caution."

Obama has previously been the subject of threats and has received security protection from the Secret Service since becoming a presidential candidate in 2007.

In one such case, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez was accused of shooting at the White House in November. He was subsequently charged with the attempted assassination of the president.

Obama and his wife Michelle were in California at the time of that incident, and no one was injured.

The Real Estate Whims of Libet Johnson: Heiress Looking to Sell ...

The heiress in 1989. (New York Magazine)

The problem with getting what you want is that sometimes, once you have it, you don?t want it anymore. The Observer has learned that Libet Johnson is looking to offload the Vanderbilt Mansion, the stately neo-Georgian mansion at 16 East 69th Street that she spent $48 million to buy scarcely more than a year ago.

Sources tell us that Ms. Johnson has been quietly shopping the townhouse around, hoping to sell for a price in the mid-$50 million range. Which does not come as a huge surprise?the heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune and the sister of NY Jets Owner and Romney bundler Woody Johnson has a reputation for falling in, and out, of love with extravagant real estate. She bought the townhouse, sans broker,?from her friend and fellow heiress Sloan Lindemann Barnett and Ms. Barnett?s husband, the founder of beauty.com. What?s a $48 million townhouse between friends?

The Vanderbilt Mansion.

So what new gem caught the heiress?s avaricious eye? Sources familiar with the matter have told us that Ms. Johnson fell hard for Huguette Clark?s eighth-floor apartments at 907 Fifth Avenue, but lost the late copper heiresses? spread to private equity chief Frederick Iseman. The Central Park-facing apartment and a few rooms of the smaller apartment are currently in contract for $22.5 million. Mr. Iseman, the CEO and chairman of CI Capital Partners, is still awaiting board approval. And?you know how those can go, so no doubt Ms. Johnson has her fingers crossed.

One broker expressed disbelief that Ms. Johnson would want an apartment in 907 Fifth?which the broker sniffed was not the kind of A-type building the heiress usually goes for?but we suppose Ms. Johnson felt a kind of kinship with Clark? and her estate, even if the socialite Johnson and the reclusive Clark would appear to have little in common other than their vast family fortunes. More likely, Ms. Johnson was just looking for something new to occupy her time.

As far as the Clark apartments go, the ranks of the rebuffed grow more illustrious by the day?Ms. Johnson joins Qatari prime minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, whose $31.5 million bid for all of both apartments in May was reportedly rebuffed by the board.

Will Ms. Johnson be able to sell the Vanderbilt mansion and make a little money in the process? The Stanford White mansion at 973 Fifth Avenue?a gilded age truffle of a townhouse?sold $42 million in June, and it required major refurbishment. But before Ms. Johnson swept in last May, the home had been lingering on the market for some time at $48 million. And while brokers say that the 1881 home and its Peter Marino-designed interiors are lovely, they note that it?s rather dark inside and the brick facade less elegant than that some of the city?s top limestone townhouses.

At the time of the sale, it ranked as the most expensive deals since the recession hit and the most expensive townhouse since J. Christopher Flowers set the previous record with his purchase of the Harkness Mansion for $53 million in 2006. Last year, Larry Gagosian scooped up the place for $36.5 million.

And it?s not even the only townhouse that Ms. Johnson, or at least her family, is trying to sell. A five-story West Village townhouse at 85 Perry Street, owned by Falconer LLC., a oft-used screen for Libet and her close kin, has been publicly listed since May with Stribling?s Pamela D?Arc. Falconer is apparently extremely eager to be rid of the townhouse, dropping the $13 million ask to a mere $9.96 million this August.

Surely this is precisely the kind of situation where one?s rich friends might come to the rescue and buy at least one of Ms. Johnson?s real estate holdings?

raley family's farm: Musing of a happy lady...

Psalm 37:4? Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. ?

Once upon a time, long, long ago - maybe as long as 46 years ago, a girl about 12 years old, who? loved animals and little children, dreamed of someday having a large family.? But the schools and society were teaching that young girl all about "zero population growth", something that God and the Bible never talked about, but a wicked society that did not value children did.
The young girl thought she saw the wisdom of not having more children than it took to replace yourself - a wicked society can brainwash young girls - but at the same time, she still dreamed of that large family.
One Sunday afternoon, she picked up the newspaper laying on the living room couch, and read an article about a large family.? They had TWELVE children.? This family was so large, they had two washing machines.? They had a big table, a big house, a big yard.? And this family was made up of both biological children and adopted children.

"That's it!"? the young girl thought.? "I could have a large family this way!? I could have twelve children!? I could have my two biological children, and then I could adopt!"? The young girl smiled...

The young girl grew up and married.? She and her husband had the two children they could responsibly have, according to the "zero population growth" philosophy.??? But her heart still longed for more children...

...so she began to do foster care.? There was one hitch.? Back in this long ago time, foster parents were not allowed to adopt, and adoptive parents were not allowed to foster.? Still, the young girl, now a young mother, filled her house with children - more than 50, as time went on.? She and her husband were one of the first emergency foster homes in a new program in Oklahoma.? The young mother loved doing foster care, and all was good - until a newborn baby boy entered her home...

...and she fell in love...

...and when he was released for adoption, the state took the young baby, now seven months old, from the young mothers arms, and gave him to an adoptive family who had been on the waiting list for years.? "You can always have more children."? The social worker told the young mother.? "These people can't have babies."

The young mother grieved the little boy who left and her empty arms ached for another child.? And soon, that grief led her to throw that zero population growth teaching out the window, because God never intended for that to be the way things are.? God puts the longing for children in the heart of a young girl, now a young mother.

And soon, that young mother had another baby.? God gave her a son to take the place of the one she loved, and lost.? Doesn't the Bible say in Psalms 126 that those that sow with tears will reap with songs of joy?

And then, there was a surprise baby, another son.

Then the young mother moved back to Texas, letting her foster license go in the process and met a group of homeschooling mothers who taught her that God actually WANTS families to have children, and not only wants them too, but calls them gifts and rewards.

And so the young mother and her husband let God plan their family and before long were blessed with two more sons...

and a beautiful baby girl!

The Lord was good to this young mother and father, who were not so young anymore.? They were blessed with seven children, and they were content.

The children began to grow up, and the oldest daughter followed in the footsteps of the young mother who was not young anymore, and she became a foster mother.? Many children went in and out of her house too, and the now older mother loved listening to the stories of her oldest daughter, and helping out with the foster children.

And then, two young children, a sister and a brother, moved into the oldest daughters foster home...

...and the older mom fell in love with them...

...and when a date was set to terminate the birth mothers rights to these two children, the now older mom and her husband sought out their foster license again, because NOW, foster parents could adopt their foster children.

What the now older mother did not know was the birth mother of these two children was pregnant again, and when they found out, the baby, a boy, was born three weeks later.

The older mom and her husband told the social workers they would adopt all three.? But the new baby gave the birth mother more time, and her boyfriend, who thought he was the new baby's father, helped her.? A lot.

And she finished all the things required of her, and the state was going to give the children back, until the boyfriend learned the baby boy was not his.

And birthmom? relinquished her baby, and took the older two children home.

And the now older mom adopted the baby boy.? And since she had her foster/adopt license again, she began to foster more children.? A newborn baby girl came into her home for a while, then went back to her mother.? Two more girls came, another baby girl, and a two year old girl.? After twenty months, the baby girl went back to her family, and the two year old girl, who was now four, was adopted by the older mom and dad.

Then a baby brother to the adopted daughter came along, and they adopted him, too.

And time went on.? One day, the now older mom got a phone call.? That long ago first two children, the sister and brother of the now older mom's first adopted child, were back in foster care and legally free for adoption.? And there was a new child, a little sister, too? Were the now older mom and dad interested?

Oh, yes!? Quickly, they began the process to get relicensed for adoption, since their home had been closed with the adoption of their last child.?

Problems arose, and the brother of this sibling group could not be adopted with girls, but the now older mom and dad continued to work towards getting the girls.? They were allowed to spend time with the girls, and they all bonded closely.? It was very exciting...

...until the now older mom and dad were approved by the agency, and their homestudy was taken to CPS, and someone there decided that the now older mom and dad's strictly religious lifestyle might not be good for the older sister, who insisted she was fine with it.? But the brakes were put on, and the now older mom and dad were not allowed to adopt the sisters.? Instead, they were moved out of the foster home they were in, and placed with a new family...

...who were very nice, and along with the encouragement of CPS and the adoption agency, allowed the now older mom and dad to spend much time with the girls still, under the name of "sibling visits".? The now older mom and dad were glad to do that.? They loved the girls.?

The now older mom cried a lot when she had to take the girls back.? She spent much time considering that maybe she should let go and not see the girls anymore, because it was too hard on them all, the older mom and dad, the two sisters, and the children who still lived in the older mom and dads home.? But still, there was a small still voice that encouraged her to continue...

And six or seven months later, the reason for that small still voice became clear...

The foster family, for various reasons, mostly health-wise, would not be adopting the sisters...

...and the now older mom and dad were asked if they were still interested...

...and they answered, Oh, yes!!

...and they went through some of the stressful process of getting licensed once again, and this time, everyone knew it was a good thing...

...and today, those two sisters moved in with the now older mom and dad, and their seven biological children, and their three adopted children, one of whom is their brother...

...and seven...and three...and two...

...makes twelve.? Twelve children.? The dream of a young girl 46 years ago was fulfilled today...

Evolutionary increase in size of the human brain explained: Part of a protein linked to rapid change in cognitive ability

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? Researchers have found what they believe is the key to understanding why the human brain is larger and more complex than that of other animals.

The human brain, with its unequaled cognitive capacity, evolved rapidly and dramatically.

"We wanted to know why," says James Sikela, PhD, who headed the international research team that included researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine and the National Institutes of Mental Health. "The size and cognitive capacity of the human brain sets us apart. But how did that happen?"

"This research indicates that what drove the evolutionary expansion of the human brain may well be a specific unit within a protein -- called a protein domain -- that is far more numerous in humans than other species."

The protein domain at issue is DUF1220. Humans have more than 270 copies of DUF1220 encoded in the genome, far more than other species. The closer a species is to humans, the more copies of DUF1220 show up. Chimpanzees have the next highest number, 125. Gorillas have 99, marmosets 30 and mice just one. "The one over-riding theme that we saw repeatedly was that the more copies of DUF1220 in the genome, the bigger the brain. And this held true whether we looked at different species or within the human population."

Sikela, a professor at the CU medical school, and his team also linked DUF1220 to brain disorders. They associated lower numbers of DUF1220 with microcephaly, when the brain is too small; larger numbers of the protein domain were associated with macrocephaly, when the brain is too large.

The findings were reported today in the online edition of The American Journal of Human Genetics. The researchers drew their conclusions by comparing genome sequences from humans and other animals as well as by looking at the DNA of individuals with microcephaly and macrocephaly and of people from a non-disease population.

"The take home message was that brain size may be to a large degree a matter of protein domain dosage," Sikela says. "This discovery opens many new doors. It provides new tools to diagnose diseases related to brain size. And more broadly, it points to a new way to study the human brain and its dramatic increase in size and ability over what, in evolutionary terms, is a short amount of time."

New test may speed detection of heart attacks - Harvard Health ...

A heart attack (more formally known as myocardial infarction) isn?t always an instantly recognizable event. Severe chest pain often has nothing to do with the heart or blood vessels. Some heart attacks are so small they pass almost unnoticed, written off as indigestion or the flu. Others are major catastrophes, causing death or long-lasting disability.

A new blood test may help speed the diagnosis. This is important, because the sooner a heart attack is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin. The sooner treatment begins, the more heart muscle can be saved.

Fifty years ago, doctors had to rely on a person?s symptoms and sometimes hard-to-interpret changes on an electrocardiogram to determine if a heart attack was under way. Today, blood tests are available that can detect the chemical signature of dying heart cells. The blood test preferred today is called troponin. Troponin is a protein complex found almost exclusively in heart and skeletal muscle cells. Its sudden release into the bloodstream signals damage to the heart muscle. Combining troponin results with characteristic changes on the electrocardiogram and symptoms is currently the gold standard for identifying myocardial infarction.

Within the first few hours of a heart attack, though, both the troponin level and the electrocardiogram can be normal. That means people with results in the gray zone are observed and monitored for 12 to 16 hours with more troponin tests and electrocardiograms.

The new high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T test can detect smaller amounts of troponin in the bloodstream. This could let doctors identify small heart attacks that would otherwise go undiagnosed, or identify heart attacks earlier?and begin treatment earlier. Results of a study of the test, published online this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that it helped emergency room doctors rule out heart attack in just a couple hours.

Skip the home diagnosis

While it is important for doctors to quickly tell the difference between a heart attack and something else, like pancreatitis or a panic attack, it?s even more important for people with chest pain to get to the hospital as soon as possible, and not try to make a diagnosis themselves. Far too many people delay calling 911 or going to the hospital, and by the time they do a substantial section of heart muscle has died.

When it comes to chest pain, it?s better to be safe than sorry. (For more information on chest pain and heart attacks, I recommend that you read this article from the Harvard Heart Letter.) Keep in mind that chest pain is only one of the possible signs of an impending heart attack. Call 911 or your local emergency number right away if you have:

  • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, burning, tightness or pain in the center of the chest
  • Pain, numbness, pinching, prickling or other uncomfortable sensations in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Unusual fatigue, especially if accompanied with a great deal of sweating
  • Sudden heaviness, weakness or aching in one or both arms

Cisco raises dividend, 4th quarter results beat Street

(Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc raised its dividend by 75 percent as the network equipment maker posted quarterly revenue and earnings that beat estimates, thanks to cost savings and an ongoing restructuring program.

Fourth-quarter net income, excluding items, was $2.5 billion or 47 cents per share, compared with analysts' average estimate of 45 cents a share as compiled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 4 percent from the year-ago quarter to $11.7 billion, compared with a Street view of $11.61 billion.

The dividend will rise to 14 cents per share in the first quarter of fiscal 2013, the company said on Wednesday.

The San-Jose, California-based company had spooked investors three months ago, when Chief Executive John Chambers cautioned that macroeconomic conditions in Europe could hurt technology spending.

Chambers told TV news channel CNBC on Wednesday that Europe was still challenging and that it was "going to get tougher before it gets better."

JMP Securities analyst Erik Suppiger said that while investors are happy that the spending cuts are boosting Cisco's profits, revenue growth is essential to the networking giant's long-term success.

"Ultimately the company needs to generate some acceleration in revenue growth," Suppiger said.

He added that it remains to be seen whether Chambers can get revenues growing again if he continues to cut spending, particularly sales and marketing.

Cisco kicked of a major restructuring program last year that included plans to slash about 15 percent of its work force and cut expenses by about $1 billion.

Last month it announced it would cut another 1,300 jobs across the company.

Cisco shares rose to $18.22 after closing up 1 percent at $17.35 on Nasdaq.

UN body opens debate on Internet future to public

The U.N. telecoms agency has invited the world's more than 2 billion Internet users to join a debate about the future of the Internet.

The Geneva-based International Telecommunications Union's announcement Wednesday follows criticism from civil society groups who say preparations for an upcoming global conference have been shrouded in secrecy.

The World Conference on International Telecommunications takes place Dec. 3-14 in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai.

Diplomats have for months been holding closed-doors discussions about proposals that include enhanced government surveillance and changing the way Internet traffic is billed.

Industry groups have warned that some of the proposals could jeopardize the smooth running of the Internet.

Activists, meanwhile, say greater government control of the Internet could endanger free speech online.

Obama Needs a Jobs Plan and Romney Needs an Experienced VP

With three months to go before the election, Yahoo! News asked a handful of undecided voters how they're leaning in the presidential race. Here's a perspective from one voter.

COMMENTARY |

The first step in dealing with any problem is to admit there is one. Neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney seems aware, at least publicly, of their problems.

In order to woo undecided voters like me, each candidate needs to overcome a serious weakness. Pitching a jobs plan that can get through a Republican Congress will help Obama, just as adding someone to the ticket with international diplomacy skills is a must for Romney, something more important than the person's race, ethnicity, gender, or how many Electoral College votes the choice might bring in.

To this undecided voter's eyes, President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney had a forgettable month of July.

With the July jobs report, unemployment barely budged again, which represents several months of flat labor growth. And, to me, Obama doesn't seem as troubled as he should be. As effective as arguments about Bain and Romney's taxes have been for the president, he is risking a lot by not telling us what he'll do during his next four years.

If Congress is stonewalling him, how can President Obama reach out and compromise with Republicans? If the Senate goes to the GOP as well (a likely prospect), he'll need to show that he can do this over the next two to four years, if he wins re-election.

For Romney, it was an even more troubling July. Despite raising tons of campaign cash, he had an awful international visit in what was an easy assignment: travel to America's allies and show he can handle simple foreign affairs. Insulting his British hosts, dumping on Palestinian culture and an awkward time with Poland's Solidarity movement all prove that Romney is an undiplomatic character.

As a voter, I worry: What's going to happen when there's a tougher foreign policy test, like negotiating with China over economics, Russia over weapons, or building an international coalition to deal with Syria or Iran's nuclear weapons? How will he handle a European monetary zone collapse, or work with Asian allies on a belligerent North Korea? America has been at its best when it worked with others.

Romney needs someone on the ticket that knows a lot about foreign policy. People including this author have suggested Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, but conservatives have already indicated they'll block her nomination as vice president.

Perhaps a better vice-president choice would be Rob Portman, someone I've mentioned as a better choice. In addition to negotiation expertise as a former U.S. trade representative, Portman has legislative experience, something Romney lacks. Being from Ohio doesn't hurt him either.

Shops and factories struggle in biting recession

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's economy is stuck in its bid to beat recession, with data on Tuesday showing retail sales growth slowed in July and manufacturing tumbling in June -- presaging another cut to the central bank's growth forecast.

Bank of England governor Mervyn King looks set to give one of his notoriously gloomy outlooks for Britain, which is in recession as the euro zone debt crisis, government spending cuts, bad weather and one-off factors are hurting the economy.

Manufacturing output shrank by 2.9 percent in June, sapped by extra public holidays to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne, though the drop was smaller than first estimated.

And retail sales growth slowed in July as record-breaking rain depressed sales of summer clothes and other seasonal products.

Britain's athletes may be having a golden Olympics, but exactly how the greatest show on earth will influence the country's economy is yet to emerge.

"The big picture is that the UK is in a severe double-dip recession and, with inflation also falling faster than expected, Governor Mervyn King will almost certainly paint a very cautious picture tomorrow," UBS economist Amit Kara said.

The central bank is expected to pave the way for more stimulus with a set of downbeat forecasts in its quarterly inflation report on Wednesday, after it started pumping an additional 50 billion pounds into the economy in July.

The Office for National Statistics said the wider reading of industrial output, which includes energy production and mining, dropped 2.5 percent in June, after a 1.0 percent rise in May.

The quarterly fall in industrial output in the second quarter was revised to 0.9 percent from the originally estimated 1.3 percent drop, indicating that the decline in GDP was a notch smaller than reported two weeks ago.

But the 0.7 percent contraction of the economy between April and June had been much sharper than expected, as a steep slump in construction compounded the weakness in other sectors.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) as well as a growing number of City economists are now predicting that the economy will shrink in the full year.

THRIFTY SHOPPERS

Britain fell back into a second recession around the turn of the year, and weakening business surveys show that a vigorous return to growth over the summer looks unlikely.

Consumers are still reluctant to spend more after rising prices and higher taxes have squeezed their budgets, and firms are holding back investment as the euro zone debt crisis is weighing on export prospects and confidence.

Wary consumers did not make for profligate shoppers last month, with the British Retail Consortium saying that like-for-like retail sales -- at stores open for at least a year -- rose by just 0.1 percent compared with July 2011.

The value of total retail sales, a measure favoured by economists and closer to that found in official statistics, was 2.0 percent up on the year, after a 3.5 percent climb in June.

"July was clearly not a golden month for retail," said BRC Director General Stephen Robertson. "After the June wash-out, more wet weather in July continued to stifle demand for outdoor gear," he added.

The weak economy is keeping the pressure on the government to loosen its tough austerity programme, aimed at erasing a huge budget deficit within five years, in order to boost growth.

However, it has stuck to its guns on deficit-reduction, leaving the task of supporting growth to the Bank.

Urban tree cover highest in Connecticut

SYRACUSE. N.Y, August 6, 2012 Tree cover in the nation's Lower 48 states covers 659 million acres, more than one-third of the nation, according to a U.S. Forest Service study of national tree cover and impervious surfaces. New Hampshire leads the nation in percent tree cover (89 percent), followed by Maine (83 percent) and Vermont (82 percent). On the other end of the spectrum, North Dakota has the lowest percent tree cover (3 percent), followed by Nebraska (4 percent) and South Dakota (6 percent).

Using aerial photograph interpretation of circa 2005 imagery, U.S. Forest Service researchers Dave Nowak and Eric Greenfield found that in urban and community areas, percent tree cover is highest in Connecticut (67 percent) and lowest in Nevada (10 percent). The study, "Tree and impervious cover in the United States," was recently published in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning.

"Urban forests are a vital part of the nation's landscape," said Michael T. Rains, director of the Forest Service's Northern Research Station. "Forest Service science is supporting stewardship of urban forests with tools that communities, organizations and home owners can use to better understand the environmental benefits of trees."

Impervious cover in the conterminous United States is estimated at 2 percent, or 46 million acres. That percent goes up in urban areas, where impervious cover accounts for 25 percent of land cover. New Jersey leads the nation in impervious cover (12 percent) and Wyoming has the least statewide impervious cover (0.5 percent).

Both people and nature play a role in urban forestry, according to Nowak. "This research demonstrates how natural environments in concert with how we develop and manage communities significantly impacts tree cover in urban areas," Nowak said. "Cover data of a city or region can provide a baseline for developing management plans, setting tree cover goals, and for monitoring change through time, all of which are essential to sustaining urban forests."

The Chaos Within Sudoku - a Richter Scale of Difficulty

Sudoku puzzles are like solving simultaneous equations, sometimes it's really easy to fill in a cell - it's the last empty one in a row, for instance. One equation. Sometimes you need to keep track of many cells and their effects to solve them all at once.

The difficulty of a sudoku depends on how many cells have to be solved at once in the most difficult set in the puzzle. There could also be a number of difficult sets that individually are moderately difficult, but taken as a whole require some endurance. Those are probably more satisfying to solve than a puzzle with a huge set, but they're not more difficult.

If I needed a hardness rating, that's what I'd pick - the the number of cells in the largest group that must be solved together. This chaos method offers no fidelity. 0-3 is easy and the hardest puzzle they found to study is 3.6, wth?

Nets? Never. Spike Lee will stick with the Knicks

(AP) ? He's New York's most prominent Knicks fan. But he's also a proud son of Brooklyn.

So would Spike Lee ever consider switching teams and rooting for the Brooklyn Nets?

No, no and no.

That's what Lee tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/MjVoeI ) in an interview discussing his split loyalties between the Knicks and the beloved hometown borough that has been the setting for many of his films.

The Nets will play their first games in Brooklyn this fall, after moving from New Jersey.

It's far from the first time Lee has vowed to go to his grave a Knicks fan.

Last year he tried to hammer home the point on Twitter, saying that anyone who thinks he's switching to the Nets "is on crack, meth and malt liquor" (http://bit.ly/pmVGdD).
